Aloha e nā hoa,
With your help, Mauna Kea Anaina Hou and KAHEA, with the wahi kupuna stewardship expertise of Huliauapa‘a, successfully listed Mauna Kea on the state Register of Historic Places. Now, we hope youʻll take a few minutes to support including Mauna Kea to the US National Register of Historic Places by June 20, 2024.
In 2023, we requested the formal nomination of Mauna Kea as a Traditional Cultural Property (TCP) and historic district to the Hawaiʻi Register of Historic Places (HRHP). In November 2023, the Hawai`i Historic Review Board unanimously agreed with us and further agreed to nominate Mauna Kea to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).
TCPs are “places associated with the cultural practices or beliefs of a living community that are both rooted in a community’s history and important in maintaining its continued cultural identity.”1 What listing on these Registers means is governmental agencies, and private actors applying for government permits, funding, or conducting historic preservation act (i.e. “Section 106”) consultation must address the impacts of their proposals on sites culturally important to living communities and their connections with those sites. For a deeper dive on the backstory and rationale for the TCP nomination, check out our blog here.
Last month the National Park Service published a notice of their review of whether to include Mauna Kea on the National Register. Inclusion on this larger register will cement requirements for federal agencies and private companies seeking federal money or permits to reckon with Mauna Kea as a living site of cultural heritage. Please help us get through this next goal line by sending comments in support of the nomination below.
Me ke aloha,
KAHEA Board + Staff
